Refugee Week provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the contribution that refugees
make to our Australian society. It enables us to celebrate the immense courage, resilience
and valuable contributions made by refugees to our community.
The theme this year is ‘A Year of Welcome’. The focus on food continues this year, as
during lock down, Australian families have been cooking and enjoying food at home more
than ever before. ‘Share a meal, share a story’ highlights the way that experiences can be
created and celebrated, as food brings people together, enabling them to connect and
interact. Sharing of stories honours the courage and contribution that refugees make,
educating our community to understand their journeys and experiences.
I would encourage you to talk with your children about what it means to be People of
Welcome. This is one of the capacities that we focus on as a Christian community at St.
Mary’s, as we live together using our heads, hearts and hands.
